The Community Fund - who wins, you decide?
Earlier this month the Thanet Extra and Chandlers Building Supplies launched their Community Fund campaign offering local charities, organisations and projects the chance of receiving a cash sum to spend on anything they would like to enhance their service.
The campaign has proven extremely popular with over 40 nominations being received so far. Each month three nominations will be put to the readers of the Thanet Extra to decide who will receive the donation, which for the first month only is a fantastic £1,000.
The nominees are:
Thanet Citizens Advice Bureau Over 60s Advice Service
Project worker and benefits advisor Maria has spent the past two years visiting pensioners across Thanet ensuring that they are receiving the correct benefit entitlements such as pension credit, disability living allowance, attendance allowance and housing and council tax benefit. Pensioners are ending up scrimping and saving on food and heating, unaware of what they are entitled to claim for. During the two years Maria has seen more than 700 clients and has raised over £700,000 in benefit payments for Thanet’s pensioners.
Thanet has the largest population of older people in Kent and the service provided by Maria is totally and free and confidential. Thanet Citizens Advice Bureau is a registered charity and relies entirely on grants and donations. The Community Fund donation would pay for Maria to continue to travel around Thanet visiting her clients.
Foreland School, Lanthorne Road, Broadstairs
Foreland School caters for seven pupils ranging from 11 to 15 years old who all have severe learning difficulties, meaning that their understanding is at a very early developmental stage. Six of the pupils are wheelchair users and some also have visual impairments. The school spends a lot of time working to improve a range of physical problems, but also endeavour to provide interesting sensory experiences for the pupils.
Sensory equipment is very expensive to buy and the school is unable to afford to replace any damaged pieces. The Community Fund money would go towards purchasing further equipment to help the pupils develop their understanding of the world.
Ramsgate & Broadstairs Sea Cadet Unit
The Sea Cadets have over 30 cadets aged between 12 to 18 years old based in ‘The Smack Boys Home’, above the Old Sailors’ Church in Ramsgate. Unlike the air and army cadets who receive funding from the RAF and army, the sea cadets rely totally on donations and fundraising to ensure that they stay afloat.
The Ramsgate & Broadstairs Sea Cadet Unit HQ is in need of some TLC and the Community Fund donation would go to helping with the pluming, electrical and carpentry needs that are urgently required in the classrooms, corridors and offices. This will ensure that they continue to offer a fantastic opportunity for local boys and girls to experience real adventure and introduce an element of discipline ensuring that they become better citizens.
Now it’s your turn to be involved. It’s your community so who will be awarded £1,000 will be entirely down to who your vote for.
To place your vote simply email chandlersthanet@pmwcom.co.uk with the name of the project you want to win in the subject box, or alternatively call Sally Bason on 01403 783400. Voting will close on Wednesday 31st March at 5.30pm.
Chandlers Building Supplies and the Thanet Extra will be giving away £500 every month for the rest of the year. So it’s not to late to send us a nomination to Chandlers Thanet Community Fund, c/o PMW Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst, West Sussex, RH14 9HP.
