St Ethelberts Cathloic Primary School receive £500

Picture_155_small.jpgSt Ethelberts Catholic Primary School is the next winner of the Chandlers Building Supplies Community Fund, supported by the Thanet Extra.

The school was delighted to be presented with a cheque for £500 which they are going to put towards buying a shed as well as selection of flowers, plants and other gardening tools.

John Letts, Ethelberts’ headteacher, commented:
“Thank you to all the friends, school governors, staff, families and children at St. Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary School for voting for us. Our Gardening Club are very excited that they can now have a secure shed, child-friendly gardening tools and the chance to purchase more flowers, water butts and plants. They are also excited as they wish to design a Rosary Garden for visitors and the parish!”

He continued: “We have already started working on the pictures and prayers since we heard that we had won the £500. The School Pupil Council has been looking at ways to make the school more inviting and picturesque and this injection of funds will give us all a great boost in enthusiasm and lots of ‘green’ ideas. On behalf of all the school community – I would like to thank Chandlers for this smashing idea that allows the children to develop ideas for each other and for us adults.”
From now until the end of the year Chandlers will be donating £500 every month to a local charity, group or organisation that needs some support. The details of three nominations will be printed in the Thanet Extra each month for the readers to decide who will receive the donation.

This month’s nominations are:

Thanet Disabled Riding Centre

Based in Broadstairs, The Thanet Disabled Riding Centre (TDRC) caters for people with mental or physical disabilities and currently has between 50 and 60 riders aged between two years old and 40 years old visiting the centre each week. The majority of the visitors are children who come from various schools in the area catering for special needs, such as Royal School for the Deaf and Foreland School.

TDRC is a registered charity and receives only nominal fees from the schools or individuals that ride, with the rest of the funding coming from donations and fund raising events. Should TDRC be successful in winning the fund they would put the money towards feed, bedding, rugs, farrier expenses, vets bills, tack, general maintenance costs for the stables.

Ellington Infant School

In 2009 Ellington Infant School, Ramsgate inherited some land after the school next door was closed to move to a new improved site. The school used much of its capital budget on improving the playground area and buying some new play equipment for the space.

There is now a horse-shoe shaped shelter as a quiet area for children and a bench for them to sit on. However, the area has great potential and if Ellington Infant School were lucky enough to win the fund they would use the money to provide the children with some extra benches for the quiet area as well as at least one other table for children to use.

Grace Community Church

Grace Community Church is an organisation where people of all ages, interests and backgrounds are welcomed and can build good friendships within the group. A fairly new church in Thanet, the church was set up as a charitable trust nearly three and a half years ago. As part of their programme to serve the local community, the trust runs a weekly parents, babies and toddlers group called ‘Coffee and Chaos’ and also an activity programme called ‘Family Fun Time’ for children aged up to 11.

If Grace Community Church were the recipients of the Chandlers Community Fund the trust would use the money to buy new toys, games and play apparatus for the ‘Coffee and Chaos’ group as many of their current items have become tired and are in need of replacement. They would also use the money to help fund ‘Family Fun Time’ events throughout the year.

To place your vote simply email chandlersthanet@pmwcom.co.uk with the name of the project you want to win in the subject box, or alternatively call Sally Bason on 01403 783400. Voting will last from Wednesday 16th June to Wednesday 23rd June and only one vote per person will be counted.

If you are a local group that could do with some help, it’s not to late to send a nomination to Chandlers Thanet Community Fund, c/o PMW Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst, West Sussex, RH14 9HP.
