East Kent Mencap Receive £500 Prize Fund

Chandlers Building Supplies is delighted to announce that East Kent Mencap is the winner of the August Community Fund Vote.

The youth clubs provided by local charity East Kent Mencap, are for young people aged between 11 and 25 who have learning or physical disabilities. They currently hold two clubs a month with over 70 members and are only able to offer this service thanks to donations from the local community. They will use the £500 to help pay for the venue, staff, entertainment and refreshments at special events, for example, to organise a disco for all members to attend.

Jane Brooke, Fundraising Manager at East Kent Mencap, commented:

“We are delighted to have won the £500 Chandlers Community  Fund Prize and I would like to thank everyone who voted for us. We rely on donations to enable us to continue providing the youth clubs which make a big difference to those who use them. This money will go towards the organisation of a special event that all members will be invited to attend, something which is only possible due to the Community Fund.”

From now until the end of the year Chandlers will be donating £500 every month to a local charity, group or organisation.  The details of three nominations will be printed in the Thanet Extra each month for the readers to decide who will receive the donation.

This month’s nominations are:

10th Margate Cub and Beaver Group

The group is located in a deprived area of Cliftonville and is dedicated to helping children from the local area. The scout group provides its members with a safe place to go and also helps children to learn the values of scouting and subsequent skills which can be applied within every day life. The leader of the group has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the group having spent 20 years as group leader.

The £500 would enable the group to purchase a water heater for their kitchen which would contribute to children’s badgework activities, such as cooking badges. In addition, the water heater would provide a facility which would be used by all members of the group and would be gratefully received.

Minster CE Primary School

Situated in Thanet, the Church of England Primary School has 14 classes and 420 pupils. The school is currently working on a project to build a covered area for the Foundation Stage outside play area which will enable children to play outside whatever the weather. Learning in the Foundation stage is experiential and play based and requires children to have access to indoor and outdoor space on a daily basis.

However, this is currently dependant on the weather therefore the School would use the £500 to purchase building materials enabling them to complete the work required to create a safe, all year round experiential play facility that can be used by the children.

East Kent Breast Cancer Mammography Appeal

To provide women living in East Kent the best possible chance of surviving Breast Cancer, the East Kent Hospitals Charity have launched a major Digital Mammography appeal to raise £1.2million to prove three high-tech digital mammography machines for East Kent’s three acute hospitals in Ashford, Canterbury and Margate.

The £500 would contribute to the purchase of the new machines which help diagnose breast cancer in an earlier stage with clearer and quicker imaging enabling early diagnosis and treatment so more women are able to survive breast cancer.

To place your vote simply email chandlersthanet@pmwcom.co.uk with the name of the project you want to win in the subject box, or alternatively call Charlie Pleasants on 01403 783400.  Voting will close on Thursday 29th September at 5.30pm.

If you are a local group that could do with some help, it’s not too late to send a nomination to Chandlers Thanet Community Fund, c/o PMW Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst, West Sussex, RH14 9HP.
